Today is the 91st birthday of famous Bengali poet, writer and critic Shankh Ghosh. A shining star of Bengali literature, Sankh Ghosh enriched Bengali literature through his poetry, prose and criticism.
Shankh Ghosh was born on February 5, 1932 in Banaripara, Barisal. His literary career began by publishing poetry in the magazine ‘Kavita’. ‘Mukh Dheke Gaye Adye’, ‘Gandharva Kavitaguch’, ‘Babur’s Prayer’, ‘Ekhan Sab Aleek’, ‘Shabd Aar Satya’, ‘Urvashi’s Laughter’ are his notable poems and prose works.
Apart from poetry , Sankh Ghosh was also a renowned critic . ‘Poetry of Rabindranath’, ‘History of Bengali Literature’, ‘Bengali Poetry: Renaissance to Modernity’ are his notable critical works.
Shankha Ghosh has received numerous awards for his literary works . He received ‘Anandbazar Patrika Sahitya Award’ in 1974 , ‘Anand Award’ in 1981 , ‘Sahitya Academy Award’ in 1997 , ‘Rabindra Award’ in 2004 and ‘Jnanpith Award’ in 2016 .
On April 21, 2021, Shankh Ghosh passed away at the age of 89 due to coronavirus.
Sankh Ghosh was a unique genius of Bengali literature . His literary works are equally relevant in the minds of readers even today.
