Today is the 94th birthday of famous Bengali writer Purnendu Patri. A shining star of Bengali literature, Purnendu Patri was a renowned poet, novelist, essayist, children’s writer, literary researcher, Calcutta researcher, cinematographer and cover artist.
Purnendu Patri was born on this day in 1931 in Nakole, Howrah. He was interested in writing since childhood. He gained fame by writing poetry in ‘Kishore’ magazine. Poetry, novels, short stories, essays, children’s literature, fiction, translation, criticism, research – he has written in almost all branches of literature. Apart from ‘Purnendu Patri’ he also wrote under the pseudonym ‘Samudragupta’.
Purnendu Patri’s notable poetry books include ‘Kishore Kavita’, ‘Swapner Ghora’, ‘Kalbela’, ‘Ratri Rahasya’, ‘Amar Gan’, ‘Sei Samam’, ‘Ekdin’, ‘Hridayer Katha’, ‘Kavita Samgar’ etc. Some of his famous novels include ‘Ek Akasher Tara’, ‘Prithibir Panchali’, ‘Titir Kathi’, ‘Neel Akasher Niche’, ‘Sutirtha’, ‘Kolkata 71’, ‘Raja Rammohan’, ‘Mahakbi Michael’ etc. He has written popular books for children like ‘Altung Phaltung’, ‘Macker Baba Khyank’, ‘Illybilly’, ‘Dustur Ramayana’, ‘Junior Byomkesh’, ‘Jumbo the Genius’ etc.
Purnendu Patri has received numerous awards and honors for his literary works. In 1962, he won the ‘Anand Award’ for his poetry book ‘Kishore Kavita’. In 1972, he received the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for his novel ‘Ek Akasher Tara’. He was awarded ‘Rabindra Award’ in 1994 and ‘Bharatiya Jnanpith Award’ in 1996.
Although Purnendu Patri passed away on February 2, 2024, at the age of 94, his outstanding literary works have immortalized him. His name will forever shine in the history of Bengali literature.
